STORM BY SATURDAY OR SUNDAY? IT'S POSSIBLE. THAT'S IN A FEW MINUTES. ALL RIGHT. ICY CONDITIONS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS FRIGHTENING ACCIDENT NEAR THE HOOKSETT TOLLS TONIGHT. A GOOD SAMARITAN HELPING ANOTHER MOTORIST OUT OF A SNOW BANK WAS STRUCK BY A VAN. STATE POLICE SAY SLICK ROADS CAUSED THE CRASH, AND TONIGHT THEY ARE SENDING OUT A STERN WARNING. OUR JEAN MACKIN IS AT THE SCENE IN HOOKSETT, ANY NEWS ON HOW THAT GOOD SAMARITAN IS DOING? WELL, WE ARE TOLD THAT HE WAS CONSCIOUS WHEN HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. BEYOND THAT WE DON'T KNOW THE EXTENT OF HIS INJURIES. HE WAS HIT RIGHT HERE ON THE OFF RAMP NEXT TO THE HOOKSETT TOLLS SOUTHBOUND ON 93, IT WAS RIGHT AROUND 7:00. HE HAD GOTTEN OUT OF HIS CAR TO TRY TO HELP ANOTHER DRIVER. STATE POLICE SHUT DOWN THE EXIT 11 OFF RAMP ON I 93 SOUTH RIGHT NEXT TO THE HOOKSETT TOLLS AFTER A GOOD SAMARITAN WAS STRUCK BY A VAN. A VEHICLE SPUN OUT INTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND ANOTHER MOTORIST HAD STOPPED TO HELP THEM. STATE POLICE SAY THE MAN STOPPED TO HELP A WOMAN WHO SLID INTO A SNOW BANK IN THIS CAR. BUT AS HE WAS STANDING OUTSIDE THE CAR, A VAN CAME DOWN THE RAMP, LOST CONTROL, AND HIT BOTH THE CAR AND THE GOOD SAMARITAN. THE SUBJECT WAS IN THE ROAD AND COULDN'T GET OUT OF THE WAY IN TIME BECAUSE OF THE ICE HIMSELF, AND THE DRIVER OF THE VAN TRIED TO REACT AS WELL AND COULDN'T. RESCUE WORKERS RUSHED TO THE SCENE. THIS SERVES AS A WARNING. THE RAMPS DON'T RECEIVE AS MUCH TRAFFIC, SO THEY DON DRY OUT. NOW THAT IT'S FREEZING THEY ARE GETTING PRETTY SLICK. THEY SAY THINK TWICE ABOUT GETTING OUT OF YOUR CAR, EVEN IF YOU WANT TO HELP ANOTHER DRIVER. GOOD FOR THAT PERSON TO STOP AND RENDER AID TO ANOTHER MOTORIST, BUT YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. I WOULD ADVISE AGAINST IT. STATE POLICE SAY IF POSSIBLE THEIR BEST ADVICE, PULL OVER TO A SAFE AREA AND CALL THEM FOR HELP. THE OFF RAMP NEXT TO THE HOOKSETT TOLLS HAS BEEN TREATED AND IS NOW OPEN TO TRAFFIC. BUT STATE POLICE SAY PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR AN ICY MORNING
Dombrowski said to think twice about getting out Puma Basket Heart Release of your car even if you want to help another driver.
State police said the accident should serve as a warning.
Police said the best thing to do is pull over to a safe area and call for help.
"The ramps don't receive as much traffic, so they don't dry out," Dombrowski said. "So now that it's freezing, they're getting pretty slick."
Emergency crews had trouble standing on the icy pavement and shut down the road, police said. The Department of Transportation was called in to treat the offramp. A plow spread salt and scraped away thick ice.
"The vehicle had spun out off the side of the road and another motorist stopped to help them," said Trooper Stanley Dombrowski of the New Hampshire State Police.
"Good of that person to stop and render aid, but you do so at your own risk," Dombrowski said. "I would advise against it."
